All of Miami is gearing up for this year’s Art Week which is centered around Art Basel Miami Beach. The marinas all along the Florida coast are filling up with yachts coming from this international event.
Miami is the chosen location in the Americas for this art fair which welcomes professionals and art lovers. Art Basel Miami Beach brings together galleries from the United States, Latin America and a whole host of other countries beyond. The works on display are by some of the most well-known Modern artists, as well as contemporary up-and-coming artists. Visitors to the art fair are treated to a wide range or paintings, sculptures, installations, photography and film on display in the main exhibition hall.
THE HISTORY OF ART BASEL
Art Basel began in Basel, Switzerland in 1970 when three prominent gallerists decided to create an event where artists, collectors, curators and critics from around the world would be drawn together. From the very first art fair, it was a success.
In 2002, Miami became the destination for a second annual Art Basel event because of its unique blend of North American and Latin American cultures. Art Basel Miami Beach is now the premier art fair in the country and a yearly can’t-miss appointment for everyone in the art world.
Since 2012, a third annual Art Basel event has been held in Hong Kong. As an international hub, where Eastern and Western cultural influences meet and mix, Art Basel Hong Kong is also a unique art fair. Starting this past September, Art Basel Cities was launched in Buenos Aires. This will be a traveling art show which stops in a different city each year.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2018 MIAMI EDITION
The 2018 Art Basel Miami Beach event is expected to attract more than 77,000 dealers, artists, gallery owners, collectors and fans to the Miami area. This year, the fair will run from December 6 to 9 and will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center. More than 200 of the leading modern and contemporary art galleries from around the world will showcase works by 4,000 different artists from 33 countries.
The convention center will be divided into the seven curatorial spaces which make up the art fair. These include gallery expositions, new art pieces by emerging artists, bodies of work by well-established artists, art history projects and live discussions among industry professionals.
